What is an EGOT?
An EGOT is an acronym for Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony. It is a title given to those select few artists who have won all four major entertainment awards. And legendary actress Viola Davis became an EGOT when she received the 2023 Grammy for Best Audio Book, Narration, and Storytelling Recording.
The idea behind this Hollywood supergroup was started by celebrity writer Norman Lear in 1984 when he said that it would be “the ultimate accomplishment”. It is a testament to the respect and admiration Hollywood has for its all-time greats and it only grows as more artists join this exclusive club.
Only 18 people in Hollywood are EGOTs as of now and they are truly some of the greatest talents that Hollywood has ever seen. From John Legend, Whoopi Goldberg, and Mel Brooks to Audrey Hepburn, Richard Rodgers and Rita Moreno, these EGOT winners transcend Hollywood circles as icons in their respective fields of music, television, film and theater.
Winning is not easy
Winning all four awards is no easy feat. It requires talent, dedication, and a great deal of hard work over many years. To win an Emmy Award, one must be recognised for excellence in television by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. To get a Grammy Award, recognition from The National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences is a must. For an Oscar, approval from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences is needed and for a Tony Award, recognition from the American Theatre Wing or The Broadway League is required.
The EGOT concept inspires Hollywood hopefuls to strive for excellence in their craft and gives them something to aim for in the process. For those who have achieved EGOT status, it is a source of pride and recognition from their peers in Hollywood.
