Television has been around for mass consumption in the United States ever since World War II. With the evolution of the TV channels, production methods, and entertainment quotient the need for televisions to be at home has become one of the basic necessities in any average household.

Contrary to popular predictions about the demise of television, television broadcasters have survived the internet boom and have only created additional avenues rather than a replacement. The Nielsen TV ratings are indeed proof of the pudding.

With daytime television shows becoming a mainstay since the 1960s, here are TV shows that have not just stood the test of time but have become en route to go on for many more decades reasserting the foothold of television on people’s lives and giving the cable network providers the boost needed to continue innovating in the medium.

  • Coronation Street (since 1960) – A British soap opera that became the world’s longest-running television soap opera and was listed in the Guinness World Records.
  • General Hospital (since 1963)  – The longest-running American soap opera as listed in the Guinness World Records.

  • Days Of Our Lives (since 1965) – One of the world’s longest-running television daytime soap operas have had significant influences on various other sitcoms that came later.
