So ‘Bella Ciao’ basically means ‘goodbye beautiful’ in Italian. It was a protest song that became popular in the late 19^th century sung by the paddy field workers in opposition against the terrible working conditions that prevailed in the country during that time. Over time, people have rendered different versions of the song to mostly signify resistance. The lyrics are so powerful that Northern Italy, in fact, banned it in 2015.
