Grammy and Emmy award-winning musician Lizzo made history on Tuesday by playing the 200-year-old crystal flute owned by President James Madison. A now-viral video shows her joyously playing a few notes on the historic flute while twerking at the Capitol One Arena in Washington, D.C.
“B—h I just twerked and played James Madison’s crystal flute from the 1800s!” she shouted. “We just made history tonight! Thank you to the Library of Congress for preserving our history and making history freaking cool. History is freaking cool you guys.”
In a second post, Lizzo wrote: “AS A FLUTE PLAYER THIS IS ICONIC AND I WILL NEVER BE OVER IT.”
The Truth Hurts singer got a special and unique invite via a tweet to perform at the Library of Congress. Carla Hayden, head of the Library of Congress, made the invite to check out their massive flute collection. Lizzo is a singer, rapper, songwriter, and also a classically trained flutist.
The flute Lizzo played was made in 1813 by French clock and flute maker Claude Laurent. He had gifted the flute to President Madison to celebrate his second inauguration, according to the Library of Congress.
