Chris Brown won the Favorite Male R&B Artist award at the American Music Awards (AMA) this year and Destiny’s Child singer Kelly Rowland accepted on his behalf. While on stage, Rowland seemed surprised by the audience’s reaction to Chris Brown’s win. Many among the audience started booing since Chris Brown had assaulted his then-girlfriend Rihanna in 2009.
Responding to the boos, Rowland said,
“Excuse me. … Chill out,” Rowland said. “But I want to tell Chris, thank you so much for making great R&B music. And I want to tell him, thank you for being an incredible performer. I’ll take this award, bring it to you. I love you. Congratulations, and congratulations to all the nominees in this category.”
Chris Brown was due to honor the 40th anniversary of Michael Jackson’s blockbuster Thriller album at the 2022 AMA but was canceled at the last moment.
