Move over, classic monsters—there’s a new queen in town, and she’s got a punk-rock attitude and a very famous ex-Batman by her side.

Maggie Gyllenhaal is back in the director’s chair for her second feature, ‘The Bride!’, and if you thought her debut The Lost Daughter was intense, you haven’t seen anything yet. This isn’t your grandma’s Bride of Frankenstein. Set in a gritty, stylized 1930s Chicago, this movie is part Bonnie and Clyde, part Joker: Folie à Deux, and 100% chaotic energy.

But is it actually good, or just “a lot”? We’ve rounded up the juiciest takes from the first reviews to see if this is a must-watch or a skip.

The Plot: Monsters in Love (and on the Run)

Christian Bale as the resurrected Monster and Jessie Buckley as the rebellious Bride in The Bride!.

The story follows a lonely, resurrected “Monster” played by a very swoon-worthy (yes, really) Christian Bale, who asks Dr. Euphronius to create a companion for him. Enter Jessie Buckley as the titular Bride—though she quickly realizes she doesn’t want to be the “bride” of anyone.

The two embark on a violent, musical, and romantic spree across Chicago that has critics comparing them to legendary outlaws.

The Highs: Jessie Buckley is a Force of Nature

If there is one thing every ‘The Bride!’ review agrees on, it’s that Jessie Buckley is absolutely feral in this role. The Guardian says she leaves “savage bite marks all over the scenery,” while others are calling it a “generational talent” performance. She dances, she screams, and she sports a wardrobe of puff sleeves and teased hair that is already destined for Halloween mood boards.

Christian Bale is also getting unexpected praise for being “appealing” and “endearing” as the creature—a far cry from his brooding Dark Knight days. Their chemistry is reportedly electric, turning a horror premise into a “sweeping romance” that you can’t help but root for.

The Lows: A “Hot Mess” or Just Misunderstood?

Not everyone is a fan of Gyllenhaal’s “maximalist” vision. Some critics found the film to be a “shrill fever dream” that lacks discipline. With spontaneous dance numbers, a detective subplot featuring Peter Sarsgaard and Penélope Cruz, and “foghorn loud” feminist messages, some reviewers felt the movie was simply doing too much.

Empire Magazine didn’t hold back, calling the editing “chaotic” and the overall result “incompetence,” even mentioning rumors of messy reshoots.

The Verdict

‘The Bride!’ is clearly a “love it or hate it” experience. If you like your movies loud, stylish, and unapologetically weird, you’re going to adore this. But if you’re looking for a traditional horror flick, you might leave the theater feeling a bit “befuddled.”

What do you think? Is Christian Bale the sexiest monster ever, or is this movie a skip? Let us know in the comments!
