Vogue has responded to accusations and backlash of cultural appropriation after Kendall Jenner published the pic in an afro hairstyle. The images were posted over the weekend on fashion magazine’s Instagram page. It showed the portraits of Jenner by wearing the 1970s hairstyle and had captions that honored the Council of Fashion Designers of America. A caption said that Fifteen years and 150 finalists later the @CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund prize has created the global stars, local heroes; it is a must-watch New York Fashion Week, and most importantly, a true sense of community among the designers of all ages and backgrounds, all with different aesthetic and commercial aspirations who communicate and collaborate.
Jenner has posed alongside model Imaan Hammam, who wore hair straight for one of the pictures. While Instagram users have criticized and praised Vogue and Jenner, the magazine has clarified the inspiration behind the photos. Vogue said that the image is meant to be an update of the romantic Edwardian/Gibson Girl hair which suits the period feel of the Brock Collection, and also the big hair of the 1960s and the early 1970s, that puffed-out, a teased-out look of those eras. They also stated that they apologize if this came across differently than intended, and they certainly did not mean to offend anyone by this.
