“The Lion King” raked in an estimated $191.8 million in the U.S., setting the record for the highest opening in July ever. The film earned an additional $351.8 million internationally over the last 10 days, bringing a total of $543.6 million globally. It was premiered in China earlier weekend, earning $55 million.
Despite critics’ harsh views, audiences flocked in large numbers to watch the live adaptation of the animated Lion King series that was a cult hit in the late 90s. A 55% score on Rotten Tomatoes didn’t deter the audience to give it a big Box-office opening.
Disney is on a cash-making spree through its entertainment ventures. Earlier it made waves after Avengers: Endgame toppled Avatar as the highest-grossing movie of all time. And since Avatar comes under Disney too, they’ll try to beat Avengers: Endgame when they release Avatar-2 in 2021.
