Regina King is Angela Bassett’s friend. King presented the honorary award to Bassett. When Bassett was seated in the audience, King looked at her and stated, “Tonight, I have the honor of presenting an Academy Award to a national treasure.”

Once Bassett was given the award by Regina King, she turned to the podium for a 15-minute speech. During the speech, Bassett turned the spotlight on other Black actresses. She also acknowledged the people who were behind her successful career in Hollywood.

 

Bassett added, “Regina. My dear, dear Regina. My sister, thank you for being here tonight as a source of support and encouragement and joy.” And, Bassett’s smooch on King’s lips has received mixed comments from the public.
