Heads up, this story contains MAJOR spoilers from The Last of Us Season 2 finale, “Convergence.” Proceed with caution.

Just when fans thought Ellie might finally hang up her vengeance-fueled boots and return to Jackson, HBO pulled the rug out from under us—with a cold-blooded twist that ripped straight from the game. So, the most awaited show of the year is out now and everyone is thrilled.

The Season 2 finale of The Last of Us ended with Kaitlyn Dever’s Abby crashing into Ellie’s life like a freight train. She’s back—and she’s pissed. With Joel long gone and her friends being hunted down, Abby guns down Jesse (RIP Young Mazino) and has Tommy at gunpoint. And just as she turns her weapon toward Ellie? Blackout.

The Flashback

Abby wakes up at the W.L.F. base in The Last of Us Season 2 flashback

But the screen doesn’t stay dark for long. We’re pulled into a flashback—two days earlier—back to the W.L.F. base camp in Seattle. The location? A repurposed baseball stadium turned post-apocalyptic sanctuary. Abby wakes up in a makeshift library, giving us our first real look into her world—her reality. And in true Last of Us Part II fashion, the story resets.

Gamers know this moment well. Just like in the 2020 game, we’ve reached the pivot point—where players shift from Ellie’s perspective to Abby’s. And HBO is following suit, diving headfirst into Abby’s storyline for Season 3.

“There’s another side to this story,” teased showrunner Craig Mazin during a pre-finale press event. “Abby is the hero of her own story.”

The Cliffhanger Ending

Expect to see a narrative shift. Season 3 is likely to spotlight Abby’s relationships, her backstory with her father, her crew, and her brutal time in the W.L.F. It’s no longer just about Joel’s legacy. It’s about what Joel did—to both Ellie and Abby. That emotional fallout is what will drive the story forward.

Showrunners Mazin and Neil Druckmann played it coy about exact details, but hinted at flashbacks, returning “dead” characters, and a massive expansion of the world—including more of the W.L.F. vs. Seraphite war, the mysterious island battle, and yes—possibly the Rat King.

“We haven’t seen the last of Kaitlyn Dever, Bella Ramsey, or even some of the characters who are currently dead,” Mazin notedwith a grin.

Among those likely to reappear? Nora, Owen, Mel—and even Jesse. Expect more from Tommy too, with actor Young Mazino teasing that Jesse and Tommy “are going to f— s— up” in Season 3.

Druckmann also pointed out a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it crane shot from Episode 7, which savvy gamers recognized as a key setup from Abby’s playthrough. And let’s be real, if you know the Rat King, you know what’s coming. (Let’s just say—hope you’re not afraid of body horror.)

What’s clear is this: if Season 1 was Joel and Ellie’s story, and Season 2 belonged to Ellie, then Season 3 is Abby’s show. And Season 4? Already brewing.

“Each season will feel like its own show,” Druckmann confirmed. “We’re asking audiences to take a leap with us. But we believe they’ll love where we’re taking them.”

Brace yourselves, folks. The Last of Us is about to get more brutal, more emotional, and way more divisive. Abby’s rise isn’t just coming—it’s already begun.
